White water wonder Most of the 250 plus competitors at the weekend’s Buller Festival were from out of town, but Nelson boy Tommy McDowell made sure he was up there with the best – taking out the C1 open men’s slalom. The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s premier white water event and attracted a large crowd of out-of-town competitors – including a former Olympian from the UK. The festival started off with the popular boater cross, an event which sees kayakers race together down the river. Over the course of the weekend there was also kayak and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP race and the classic cardboard cup, which involves making a vessel out of cardboard and tape and taking it down the river. The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison is known as the “four river plains”, with its top spots being used by hundreds of competitors over the weekend. Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder says this was no doubt the biggest weekend on the Murchison calendar, with plenty of money spent in the town. “I think this year we had a lot of people coming from further. We had a lot of international competitors and not just professional athletes but some just here for a good social time,” she says. “There was a good long queue everywhere, the Four Square was flat out, the petrol station was flat out. I don’t think they’ve sold as much bread, meat and beer as they did this weekend.”

Development boom for region A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wensley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural residential subdivision in Wakefield are the latest developments to get the green light as the Tasman district continues to grow. Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has already started stage one of their holiday park development which will be open in time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings had a resource consent for their 95 lot rural residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while commissioners have approved the Olive Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd. A resource consent for the Lower Queen St holiday park was granted last September, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they are presently working on installing fencing and the underground cabling and water pipes. He says it has been a big job with 600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz “We’ve already spent four months on this stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for selfcontained motorhomes and caravans and then we’ll get started on the ablution block and laundry. “We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t be taking permanent residents.” The holiday park is being developed on the site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s business, Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes at 442 Lower Queen St and Rod says they have already been getting inquiries from prospective customers. “Demand will be huge judging by the SEE PAGE 2

Development boom FROM PAGE 1 amount of inquiries we have been getting without even advertising. The plan is to be open for next summer.” The new Wakefield subdivision was approved after more than two years of planning and Ben Nevis Holdings spokesman Richard Martin says it will be a significant development for the town. “It’s all part of an on-going development we’ve had in the past 12 years. There’s already 45 houses on 49 allotments on the same title there now. “We’ve been working on the plan with the council and the community

to help give direction for the growth of Wakefield. It’s going to give security for the town’s businesses.” Richard, who farms in Wakefield, says they decided to develop the land after it was rezoned residential rural in the mid-1990s. The latest 95 lot subdivision is being sold by Bayleys. Olive Estate’s owner, Integrity Care Group which also owns Stillwater Gardens Retirement Village in Richmond, applied last year for resource consents to establish and operate the 8.4 hectare village that will be home to about 400 residents aged 55 and over. The village include 112 villas, 30 two-storey townhouses and three

multi-storey apartment blocks containing a total of 26 apartments and a care facility with 58 apartments, a rest home, dementia care ward and hospital care units. “We are pleased with the resource consent decision and are excited to move on to the next phase of developing,” Olive Estate company director Kristin Nimmo says. “The next stage for us includes finalising the design drawings for building consent and commencing the process for registering the village with the Retirement Village Registrar. “We are keen to progress this as soon as possible during the next few months.”

WHAT A WHOPPER: Flynn Green holding a very nice Tasman Bay kingfish. This was part of the catch from the Fraser Logging fishing competition held at the weekend. The kingfish was one of about six that were caught by Team Woodstock, matching a rather large snapper of 11.5kg that was also caught. The competition had nearly 50 competitors from Fraser Logging and their friends and business partners and was held over the Friday and Saturday. A large amount of prizes were distributed to competitors over a family BBQ and a few cold beers on Saturday.

The sports events in particular need temporary seating to accommodate the 2200 people expected to attend them, and that will result in less court space for everyone else – a year after Saxton Stadium closed due to flood repairs. Nelson City Council confirmed just four of the five basketball courts would be available to use throughout the winter sports season, but says it hadn’t given priority to the Nelson Giants in particular. Phillip Rollo Any event that requires space for spectators “might take priority” over the participation users of Saxton Stadium, according to Nelson City Council, who are currently trying to juggle a 50 page list of bookings. With the future of the closed Trafalgar Centre still up in the air, many event organisers are scrambling to find a suitable alternate venue. A lot of these are hoping to get into Saxton Stadium which is the region’s premier participation sports venue. However, it’s beginning to have an affect on the current users of the venue who remain in the dark about how much court space they will be allowed in a busier than usual year. “I was involved in the stadium from well before it even got its piles in the ground. I’m a very committed grassroots/ participation person and at the moment it’s become an events centre,” says Nelson Bays Volleyball’s operations manager, Pamela Brodie. While we’ve been unable to completely meet every group’s requirements, for the most part, the codes have been willing to work with us and be flexible.” Netball Nelson’s manager Chelsea Routhan says it has been a “struggle”, but they were working closely with the other codes, Sport Tasman and Nelson City Council, so everyone can benefit as much as possible. “It’s definitely been difficult and Saxton Stadium is a participation venue, so we’re trying to get as much utilisation as we can,” she says.

Detached caravan collides with vehicle outside college A wayward caravan crashed into a moving car outside Waimea College last Thursday, but miraculously there were no injuries. A driver, towing the caravan north on Salisbury Rd, had just come through the Arbor Lea intersection traffic lights when it became detached, police say. The caravan then moved across the centre line and collided with the right hand side of a vehicle travelling south. The accident happened at about 2:15pm,

and had the potential to be much more dangerous had it been after 3pm when hundreds of school students would have been out on the road. It is unknown how the caravan become detached, and police say it did not require a safety chain as it had an “unusual connection” that involved a cord that activates brakes if it was to become detached. There were no passengers in either vehicle and it is unknown whether there will Fire fighters inspect a car that had been in a collison with a wayward caravan on Salisbury be any charges. It’s ironic that removing all of the rubbish bins at Waimea Intermediate School has halved its waste. For four years now, Waimea Intermediate hasn’t had rubbish bins. Instead, the focus is on recycling. Students and teachers put their paper and plastic into recycling bins, and food scraps go in the food scraps bins. Anything that can’t be recycled is then taken home. Teacher Todd McAuley says children have been bringing “nude lunchboxes” with multiple compartments, which means they no longer have to wrap their food in glad wrap or foil. “It seems a bit weird taking rubbish bins away to decrease litter but we’ve had quite a bit of success with it,” he says. “By taking home the waste and the rubbish, the parents actually see how much rubbish can be generated.” Todd hoped parents would then alter the options their child brought for lunch, as healthier food such as fruit and vegetables left a lot less waste with no packaging. “We’re always going to struggle with changing the habits of everybody but

Waimea Intermediate School students Kendall Thompson, 11, and Zella Kohu, 10, with their ‘nude lunchboxes’. Photo: Phillip Rollo. certainly I believe we have helped lots of kids and families.” The feedback from parents had generally been positive, but there were still some children coming to school with food wrapped in glad wrap and with

packets of chips. “But what we’re saying is don’t leave that here, take it home.” Tahunanui School will be the next school to remove its rubbish bins, confirming the move for later this month, in a bid to reduce waste as well. Port Nelson opens its gates to public

Port Nelson is the hub of the region’s economic grunt, but for most of us watching ships come in and out of the harbour is about as close to the action as we can get, until this weekend. The port is hosting an open day this Sunday, where the public can come and see what the port does on a daily basis. Rob Hawkes says since all ports in New Zealand agreed to a security code that saw them gated off from the public, the open days have been a chance to show the community what

it gets up to. “We do it every three years, and the idea is to give people an appreciation of what happens inside the security gates of the port.” Around 83,000 containers a year come through the port. Most of it is produce going out of the region, like logs, fish, food and wine. The open day is this Sunday from 10am to 4pm, and there will be displays of some of the equipment they use, displays of tug boats, stuff for kids to do and food stalls. Everyone over 16 needs a photo ID to enter.

Relay for Life unites thousands

Rory, Kate and Sharon Medcalf with Larissa Illing at the Relay for Life on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

“Surreal” is a word Jeni Chambers uses to describe two moments in her life – the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer and the day she survived it. The Tahunanui woman was just one of thousands of people who walked or ran laps around Saxton Field throughout Saturday evening and the early hours of Sunday morning for the 2014 Relay for Life. Jeni works at Pomeroy’s Coffee Factory in Wakatu Estate, and walked alongside her staff mates at the Relay for Life. As well as her own fight, Jeni said she would think about her sister, who died three years ago from cancer, as she walked laps. “I’m thinking of her a lot. I’m thinking of the pink medicine. I’m thinking of the people that helped me a lot. Everything is positive though, you can’t have a negative thought,” she says. “This is an awesome

event and it’s great to see so many young people out there supporting the cause.” Jeni’s surgery was 20 December 2006 – a date she will never forget. “It’s just so surreal because you don’t think it’s happening to you.” Doctors never spoke about the possibility of death – it was all about survival, and just last year Jeni was told she was all clear. “It was surreal too.” Jeni says the support from friends and family was “amazing”. “You had to get your own head around it first then you slowly told people, but once I told them they were really good. [What got me through it] was my children telling me that they want me to live for them. I always said I’d die for my kids and I would, but my daughter said she wanted me to live for us and that was the turning point.” Nearly everyone at the Relay for Life had been affected by cancer in some form – it had killed their loved ones or their friends or family had survived it, and others were there and still fighting the disease. Tears rolled down Edna Brownlee’s cheeks when she explained that her father died seven months ago from cancer. She was at the Relay for Life with a group of ten from the Tasman District Council and says the support from her team was “awesome”. Sara Davidson, representing the Community College, has had both friends and family that have passed away from cancer and she says the reasons for participating in the event were very personal. “It’s to celebrate, remember and fight back,” she says. “In the past year I’ve lost two friends to cancer. It’s scary how it happens to someone you know when you just don’t think it will. As I walk I’m just remembering them.” An exact figure of how much was raised from the weekend is yet to be confirmed, although it’s likely to be in excess of $200,000. In total, there were 105 teams taking part.

It has a new name and a renewed focus but the Sprig and Fern Summer Harvest Fare is promising to be just as popular as the formerly named Last of the Summer Fare. The free event has grown in popularity over the years and is Richmond’s biggest street party with food, wine and beer stalls surrounding a laid back family atmosphere at Sundial Square. This year’s celebration of the end of summer will take place on March 21 and organisers say the emphasis will be on providing great food and music ensuring the atmosphere at this year’s Summer Harvest Fare will be memorable. With entertainment from the Nelson Jazz Club there will be a variety of music to get you up and dancing as the region celebrates the success of the regions fantastic harvest. Although there will be a security presence, the fair is a laid back affair and is a great opportunity to get together with friends and family after work to enjoy a Sprig & Fern beer, a range of wines and ciders or to sample some good local gourmet food. With about 40 stallholders showcasing a huge variety of food and drink there should be no end of flavors and smells to tickle your taste buds. Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint says with our region producing so much fantastic food and

Fiona Fahey, Wendy Crighton and Diane Chapman enjoying last year’s summer fare. drink it’s only appropriate to call it the harvest fare and they’ve listened to feedback from last year’s event. “We’ve changed the band and will be providing free rides on the Double Decker bus to help those further afield than Richmond come and enjoy the spoils of summer. So it should be a great event, we’re really excited about it.” The bus will do a round trip from Richmond into Nelson via Tahuna and back through Stoke at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm. The NBus service will also be dropping off and picking up fair goers until 7pm outside the mall leaving you no excuse for not being there. Richmond plans winter festival

At the time of writing this we have a large search and rescue operation under way in Nelson Lakes National Park where a 19 year old from Germany is missing. This situation brings up two points I’d like to talk about. Firstly, while this young man was well prepared with food and good equipment, he did not leave clear information about what he was doing and where he was going, and unfortunately he has become separated from his food and equipment. All tramping huts have log books, and the information people put in them makes a huge difference when it comes to finding people or getting help quickly when people get into difficulty. I would urge anyone heading out, even for a day walk, to make sure they tell someone where they are going and when they expect to get back. Likewise, if you’re out tramping, put some really detailed information in the hut logs. Secondly, I’d like to acknowledge the work that LandSAR volunteers do to assist police with these searches. These people give up their own time to go in search of other people. In this case they have been tramping in snow and freezing alpine conditions. It’s not just time they give but the effort and commitment and without them search and rescue would be even more difficult. These people are fit, skilled and very knowledgeable about the outdoors, and we are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated bunch ready, willing and able to assist with the many searches we undertake each year in the Nelson Bays Area. I take my hat off to all the search and rescue volunteers and urge everyone out there not to take safety in the outdoors lightly.

This winter will be interrupted by a new week-long festival aimed at giving Richmond a break from the winter blues. The Tasman District Council and Richmond Unlimited have been finalising plans for the new festival that will be held in Richmond from June 23-29. Organisers hope to have a number of activities over the week including fashion shows, old time dances, cooking demonstrations and a street party. “We have events from spring to autumn but nothing in the winter”, the council’s community and recreation advisor Mike Tasman-Jones says.

Mike says the festival, named Winterruption “because it will provide a pleasant interruption to winter”, could also feature movies in the Town Hall. “They used to show movies there in the old days so we might try and recreate that. We are also thinking about transporting some ice into Richmond to create a real winter atmosphere for the street party.” Mike says winter festivals were popular in other centres around New Zealand and there was no reason why one catered for locals couldn’t be successful in Richmond.

“We recognised there was a gap and after tossing the idea around for while decided to plan a winter festival. “We are still pulling all the strands together but there has been a fair bit Mike Tasmanof interest from Jones. retailers. It will be a lot of fun for everyone and hopefully it will give retailers a boost.”

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re Village Cycles owner Jim Matthews with a new Surly bike his team custom-made. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

‘Fat bikes’ the new rage They may look like a motocross bike with pedals but the new fat-tyred Surly Pugsleys are most definitely all bicycle. Designed and made in Minnesota in the US by alternative bicycle manufacturer Surly, the fat tyred all-terrain bikes were initially designed to ride across snow during the harsh northern winters. But the Surly fat-tyred bike range has also proven a big hit on all rough terrain with 3.8 inch to 4.8 inch wide tyres perfect for floating over all kinds of rocks, tree roots and sand. Although the fat-tyred bikes look “gimmicky” Village Cycles owner Jim Matthews says that the looks are deceiving. The fat bikes, as they have become known, handle surprisingly well and are reasonably fast rolling. “I remember the first time I saw one of them at a bike demonstration in the US a couple of years ago, and I thought what the heck is this. But a guy rode one around a cross-coun-

try obstacle course racing against guys on conventional mountainbikes and he finished second. Jim says Village Cycles is Surly’s sole retailer in the Top of the South and he has already sold two of the fattyred bikes. He says riders will enjoy the simplicity of riding a hardtail bike that delivers a super-soft ride courtesy of the fat tyres that are only inflated to around seven to nine pounds per square inch. “One of the guys who has one of the fat bikes we sold has ridden the Heaphy, Coppermine and Rainbow Rage, and he says it’s perfect for those tracks.” Jim says Specialized has followed Surly’s lead and also makes a fat bike and he predicts that other bike manufacturers will join the fat bike club in the next few years. He says they are also affordable, starting at around $1600 which is cheaper than most dual suspension bike because you aren’t paying for two shocks.

Nelson Mail’s circulation takes another drop Chawiwan Thakinbut (Wee)

½ hour $40 1 hour $60

Mon – Sat 9.30am – 7pm

The Nelson Mail’s circulation has taken another whopping drop, according to figures released from ABC Circulation. The Mail has lost almost eight per cent of its circulation on the same time last year, losing more than 2000 subscribers in the past two years. While fewer people are buying their paper, its editor last week trumpeted

its online readership stats. But online readership figures provide little comfort for advertisers, as their adverts don’t appear online, meaning the new statistics show fewer people will see an advert placed in the Nelson Mail now than ever before. The drop in circulation is a continuing trend for the Mail, which often appears at the top of circulation drops in the South Island.

Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says the figures are part of an ongoing trend, and one of the reasons why advertisers are no longer looking at daily newspapers. “We’ve seen huge growth in our locally owned community newspapers and the main reason is the response our advertisers get,” he says. “That’s because our circulation can’t be beaten. We go to every home and

we make sure our paper has the best stories and photographs in it. No other community newspaper in Nelson can say that.” Waimea Weekly is delivered free to more than 10,000 homes and businesses every Wednesday, and its sister paper, Nelson Weekly, is delivered free to more than 20,000 homes and businesses every Tuesday.

company has arrived

Based at Queen St in Richmond, pcMedia is now open for business – and they are all about helping you. They’ve recently been awarded the title of Microsoft New Zealand Cloud Partner of the Year, which means pcMedia have been named the top cloud company in the country, competing against larger businesses to win the award on the global stage. How does a small business based out of Blenheim achieve such great heights? They’ve been in the IT business for twenty years and know a good thing when they see it says managing director Lee Harper. “Businesses are saving time, money and effort with cloud computing. We started talking cloud to businesses a few years ago and people were reluctant to store more than their emails there. Now, people are getting more comfortable with it, realising how flexible it is and that the server in the corner of their office can be a liability when things go wrong.” So how does cloud computing work? Instead of buying expensive computers, software and a server which require continual upkeep, your software and data is securely stored on a cloud server which can be accessed by any Apple or android tablets, laptop, desktop or smart phone, as well

as the normal Windows-based computers. That means you can access your files, emails and network anywhere, at any time. Your business is not tied to the office so should something happen, your entire workforce is able to work remotely, on the go with no expensive down time required. With more and more businesses recognising the benefits of cloud, pcMedia have also developed their own cloud products that go hand in hand with making business easier, including a back-up product named ‘Go Backup’, which means anything stored on cloud computing is guaranteed.Whether you own a small or medium enterprise with two employees or 50 staff, cloud computing can give your business IT flexibility that has not previously been available. It can lower your risk and improve your budget and you can quickly take up new technologies that support your growth, without the risk involved with purchasing expensive server and workstation hardware. With a widely skilled and dedicated team on board at their new Richmond branch, pcMedia can unravel the world of IT for you. Supervision Skills Post graduate Undervalued in Workplace certificate in professional supervision Workplace supervisors are often expected to deliver in demanding circumstances, often with little or no professional training. Supervision

A world class education is closer than you think

ENROL NOW

Poor supervision can have serious consequences in any workplace, and many supervisors in are given little or no professional supervision training before taking up their roles. In March 2014, NMIT will launch the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision The certificate, developed by Wintec, will run part-time over one year. It’s split into two parts and each part involves three two-day workshops as well as follow up activities – so it can easily be fitted around work. It’s the first time the qualification has been offered in Nelson and it’s targeted mainly at professionals already working with people or looking to move into a supervisory role. NMIT Social Sciences Counselling Coordinating Tutor, Raewyn Laurenson says supervision skills are greatly under-valued in most workplaces and supervisors are often selected based on the length of their experience rather than their qualifications and training. We do have some excellent, professionally trained supervisors in our community, but demand for effective supervision is increasing.” Raewyn says.

Common mistakes that supervisors can make include collusion and a reluctance to take responsibility, or being too directive. “Some of the key skills that a supervisor needs are the ability to listen without judgement, summarise what’s been said and help people think through their practice and come up with their own solutions,” she says. Raewyn Laurenson says good supervision can prevent disasters and harm from happening and will make a workplace feel safer, happier and less stressful for employees - leading to reduced staff turnover and greater profitability. “It’s time that supervision skills were valued more highly by employers, as they are already in many of the caring professions like counselling and social work.” she says. For more information or to apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision which starts on March 13th. Contact 0800 422 733 or visit www.nmit.ac.nz and search Supervision.

Summer is coming to a close but there’s still plenty of time to do that home painting project and the team at Resene Richmond have just made it easier, with a massive 25 per cent off most of their products for the month of March. Philip and Audrey Jordan have owned Resene Richmond for 20 years, the first 13 spent in Stoke. They say the typical painting season runs from Labour Weekend until Easter, so locals have just another six weeks to get onto any outdoor painting project. To help, they’ve decided to not only offer their wealth of knowledge and top paints but a massive 25 per cent discount on the retail price of premium paints, from test pots to 10 litre pails, wallpaper and all decorating accessories and cleaning products. Phil says the idea behind the sale is to help locals make the most of the nice weather before it disappears. He says the sale is the last chance to cash in on a deal and get that painting project sorted before winter. For more information, or for Phil’s expert advice, pop in and see him at the Resene store on the corner of Queen St and Gladstone Rd or give him a call on 544 9189. Ever wanted to take a cruise? Mud run’s future unknown

This Sunday’s Muddy Buddy will be the last in its current location. The popular mud run, which is a major fundraiser for Tasman School, drew 1400 people last year and that number is expected to rise this weekend. But it’s unknown what will happen with the event in 2015. Currently held in the Moutere Estuary, and near Tasman School, there was some concern from Tasman District Council Francesca Todd Rose was all smiles at the completion of the Muddy that the event had the potential to damage the saltmarsh. Buddy Fun Run last year. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

While the school had looked into a numbers of ways in which it could safe guard that area, the final decision was to move it next year. “The course we’ve changed each year but it’s always gone from the same point and finished at the same point,” says principal Pip Wells. “We’ll have to find another home. It won’t be as close to the school obviously.” So Pip was hoping this year’s event would be as much as a success as it has in its previous four years, going out in style.

The Muddy Buddy costs $10 per person if entering online and a family of four is $30. For anyone registering on the day, entry is $15 per person or $40 for a family of four. Entry includes a free downloadable team photo. Participants need to check in between 9:30am and 10:30am on the day, before racing starts at 11am. Laps are about 2 km and take 10-15 mins give or take, and shoes are compulsory for each competitor.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are being called for Nelson’s coolest war effort. The award winning Lest We Forget, now known as “The Anzac Experience”, is on again on April 25, 26 and 27 – and Nelsonians of all ages are invited to join up and help make it happen. Volunteers are needed for a variety of active duties, from manning the information post or doing border patrol, to running missions, and providing key supply chain or logistics support. If you’re interested in joining up – from doing a shift on one day to helping for the entire weekend please contact dramatix@dramatix.co.nz or by calling organiser TJ Ramsay on 027 545 8102.

Shane says it’s for that reason that they can build a home cheaper than anyone else. They have 68 standard homes to choose from, and each of those can be modified to your requirements. “The best thing to do is to come and have a chat with Jenny Walton, A1 Homes New Home Consultant, and find out what we can offer. We can then help you find land if you need it, arrange on site consultation to make sure the land you are interested in is fitting for your requirements, and put a few options forward. All that doesn’t cost a cent, it’s all no obligation, just part of the service we give,” says Shane. A1 Homes isn’t just about saving you money and making building your home a stress-free experience, the team has also picked up numerous industry awards. Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Kayak Fishing is experiencing an amazing increase in popularity, is now recognised as one of the fastest growing water sport in New Zealand and it’s certainly making fishing far more accessible to all. Our kayak fishers have been hauling in some great sized gurnard, snapper and terakihi. Tip for kayak fishing and catching gurnard at Delaware Bay – paddle out on the outgoing tide or you’ll be paddling backwards! Head out to around 50ft of water where the sand meets the mud, anchor up here (don’t drift), use a size 5 hook, 1 inch cube pilchards for bait and suspend your bait just off the ocean floor, sit back and smile. This method has produced gurnard up to 1.13kg. The word must have got out last weekend that the snapper are still off Rabbit Island. When we arrived there were 3 boats fish-

ing in about 20 feet of water at the eastern end of the island, and when we left there were 18 boats fishing inside a square kilometre radius. We were fortunate enough to catch 10 fish above the 30cm mark over a period of a few hours. The Kayaking fraternity, who have been out several times this past week, have also had no trouble catching these fish. A tip for catching these smaller fish is to make sure that you use flasher rigs with recurved hooks about 3/0 in size, and use either small cubed pilchards or squid as bait. By using the recurved hooks the fish will generally hook themselves, leaving the easy job of winding them to the surface. Also, Dawnbreakers has experienced free divers in its ranks, and would welcome any new members to benefit from their experience.

Tough start for Wheelers

The Tasman Wheelers elite men’s team did all the hard work but still missed out on a podium finish in Saturday’s opening round of the Benchmark Homes cycling series near Oxford in North Canterbury. Kieran Hambrook produced the best result in the elite men’s race over 160 kilometres, finishing 10th in 3 hours 46 minutes 36 seconds, just two seconds behind winner Cameron Karwowski. Tasman’s Chris Nicholson was 11th in the same time with George Bennett 29th in 3:46:39 and Henry Jaine 33rd in 3:46:41. Karen Fulton finished fifth in the 120km women’s race in 3:27:22 with Caitlin Holmes sixth in the same time. Dean Fulton was fifth in the 120km masters race in 2:57:10 after team-mate Warrick Spence had earlier launched a promising attack 15km from the finish. The next race in the six-race series is in Hokitika on April 13.

Big win for young golfer Now that he knows what winning feels like, Ryan Chisnall is aiming for more success on the golf green in 2014. The 19 year old, who plays out of Greenacres Golf Club, took out the South Island Championship in Dunedin last week – the most significant win of his young career. Having been part of the New Zealand development squad for a number of years prior, and finishing second at the New Zealand Amateur Golf Championships last year, Ryan has always shown great Ryan Chisnall’s recent win at the South Island Championship was potential. But he finally delivered the biggest win of his young golfing career. Photo: Phillip Rollo on that at the St Clair course beat-

ing Canterbury number one Jordan Bakermans by one hole to finish with an eight-under par 276 and claim the title. “I had finished second place eight times or something stupid [at national events] so to actually win something felt pretty good,” he says. “To win one of the top tournaments in New Zealand meant even more.” The Brightwater teen had just turned down an offer to play at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne this year in a bid to represent New Zealand at the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship.

So last week’s result couldn’t have come at a better time for Ryan who is now hoping to crack the top six ranked amateurs in New Zealand so he can be part of the squad. “I’m ranked eighth in New Zealand but the top six, based on the world rankings, get invited to the Asian amateur so I’ve got plenty of time to catch up and make some ground.” Ryan led from start to finish at the South Island Championship. He shot 65, 68, 70 and then a round of 73 on the par 71 layout, and admits nerves certainly played their part at the end.

Notice of intention to grant leases of part Tasman District Council land on Kina Peninsula

Dog’s Breakfast Motueka

Notice is hereby given of the Tasman District Council’s intention to consider granting five leases for the purposes of establishing boat sheds on land at Kina Peninsula known as “LEH Baigent Reserve”. In mid 2013, Carter Holt Harvey undertook a tender to sell this land on Kina Peninsula. The land in question is known as Part Lot 76 DP 427 (Title Reference/CFR – NL9C/707). Council was approached by a group of local residents with a proposal for a contribution to be made towards the potential purchase price for the land. The residents would contribute a substantial sum of money that would allow Council to put in a tender for the purchase of the property. A condition of that contribution would be that, in the event the Council succeeded in winning the tender, Council would commence a public consultation process regarding a proposal to grant leases to five of the residents (the contributors) who contributed significantly to the purchase price. If approved, the leases would provide for the establishment of boat sheds on a small part of the land proposed for purchase. Council was successful in winning the tender and now owns the land in fee simple (freehold). Council gives formal notice of an intention to grant five leases to the contributors. The leases will be for a term of 35 years (less 1 day), at a nominal rental. The purpose of the leases will be to establish boat sheds. The maximum size of each boat shed building will be 55m2, with a maximum lease area (including water tank, roof area, and sealed yard) of 100m2 per lease. Should the leases be granted, the establishment of the physical buildings will still be subject to building and resource consent requirements. The area proposed to be set aside for this purpose is approximately 1000m2 to allow for some “common land”, plus space between individual lease areas. Each prospective tenant will be able to choose a location of up to 100m2 within the general location indicated by the 1000m2. Council is entering the decision making process with no pre-determination. The contributors know that the grant of the leases is not assured. Persons with an interest in this issue are encouraged to make submissions in the knowledge that they will be considered fully. Further information may be obtained by contacting Robert Cant on Ph. 03 543 8400, or via Email on robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz. A copy of this notice will posted on www.tasman.govt.nz and will include plans showing the approximate location of the 1000m2 proposed. Written submissions or objections should be sent to: Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond, Attention: Robert Cant Submissions or objections will be received up to 4.00 pm on 21 March 2014. Please indicate in your submission if you also wish to formally present your submission at a hearing.

Proposed Navigation Bylaws and Moorings Review: Update The Council is seeking feedback on the proposed replacement of the existing Navigation Safety Bylaw with a set of Navigation Bylaws (incorporating maritime facility bylaws) as well as possible changes to the mooring rules in the Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP). The bylaw review affects a wide range of boating activities and navigational matters, while the TRMP review looks at where moorings are located and how they can be better managed. The consultation period opened on 6 January 2014 and closes on 28 March 2014. Information on the proposed changes to both the Bylaw and TRMP can be accessed on the Council’s website (www.tasman.govt.nz/consultations) or you can request hard copies from info@tasman.govt.nz. The website contains the Statement of Proposal –Navigation Bylaws (2014), the Discussion Paper on the Review of Mooring Management and the relevant feedback forms. A series of public workshops are being held around the District in early March to help people understand the proposed changes, answer questions people may have, assist with submissions and refine the proposed changes. The workshops will focus on changes to the coastal rules. The navigation bylaw review also affects boating activities on rivers and lakes. If there is sufficient interest the Council will also hold a specific workshop on these proposed changes. Please contact harbourmaster@tasman.govt.nz to register your interest in a ‘rivers and lakes’ workshop. How do I give Feedback? If you want to give council some feedback on the proposed changes you can attend the public workshops, go online to fill in the submission form for the Navigation Bylaws proposal and feedback form on the mooring review, or pick up a copy of the documents and forms at any Council service centre.
